Homeland Security Measures

Visitors must show one (1) form of identification (a government-issued photo ID, i.e., Federal employee badge, driver's license, passport, green card, etc.) All visitors should be prepared to have their personal belongings inspected, including bags, backpacks, or purses, by wand, magnetometer, or x-ray as they enter buildings.

Visitors may be required to log in at building entrances; please wear a visitor's pass.

Security staff will be looking for and confiscating any suspicious or potentially dangerous materials. U.S. Code prohibits bringing any dangerous weapons onto Federal property, including anything with a blade longer than 2½ inches. Meeting participants may want to leave extra bags or personal materials at their hotel to minimize the time needed for inspection.

Driving and Parking Information

If you must drive and do not have an NIH photo ID badge or an NIH parking permit, you can enter the campus only at the Old Georgetown Road and Center Drive entrance or at the Rockville Pike and South Drive entrance. Please allow adequate time to pass through security checkpoints. The Natcher Building is at 45 Center Drive across from the National Library of Medicine.

An alternative to attempting to park at NIH is to drive to Bethesda and park in a public lot. From Bethesda, either take the Metro (stop is located at East-West Highway and Wisconsin Avenue) to the Medical Center stop or walk up Wisconsin Avenue to Center Drive (a 10 to 15 minute walk). You may also drive and park at other Metro stops on the Red Line that have public parking and take the Metro to the Medical Center station. Convenient stops include Rockville, White Flint, and Grosvenor.

Visitors must park in designated visitor parking lots and enter through specified entrances. (see the Visitors Campus Access Map).

Weekdays:

Center Drive and Old Georgetown Road (Primary entrance for patients, visitors, and commercial vehicles)
5 a.m. to 2 p.m. - Inbound traffic only
2 p.m. to 7 p.m. - Inbound and Outbound traffic
7 p.m. to 5 a.m. - Closed to all traffic

METRO Information

Please note: Visitor parking is limited at NIH. Visitors are encouraged to use public transportation such as the Metrorail subway system, which has a convenient stop (Medical Center) on the NIH campus. Visit the "Metro" site for information on fares and schedules http://www.wmata.com/.

If you are not employed on site at the NIH campus, we strongly encourage you to take Metro since parking at NIH can be very difficult to find and there are very few visitor parking spaces. The Natcher Conference Center is a 5-minute walk from the Medical Center station on the Red Line. The Natcher Building is on Center Drive directly behind the Medical Center stop.
