The Symposium Steering Committee invites you to submit an abstract of your scientific research to be considered for a poster presentation at the symposium Digital Biology: The Emerging Paradigm, November 6-7, 2003. The deadline for submission is September 8, 2003. Notice of acceptance will be sent to authors by September 30, 2003.
Please note: Abstracts accepted for poster presentation will be reprinted for distribution in the conference briefing book and posted with other symposium documents on the public NIH BISTI web site. Authors should consider whether their sensitive and unpublished findings are appropriate for such presentation.
Selection Criteria
- Abstracts demonstrating how computational approaches to biomedical research have yielded breakthroughs advancing the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease.
- Abstracts on innovative computational and quantitative approaches with broad impact on the biomedical discovery process.
- Abstracts on Scientific Data Integration that address current challenges (e.g., ontology, data format) associated with the use of massive and complex data sets from diverse, distributed sources and different levels of biological systems.
- Abstracts on Networked Science that address infrastructure requirements as we enter an era of intensely collaborative science enabled by intelligent computer networks and distributed infrastructures for open scientific research.
- Abstracts on Quantitative Biology that address the analysis and interpretation of biomedical knowledge and the modeling of biological phenomena.
- Abstracts submitted by domestic or foreign academic institutions, Federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, invited speakers, and for-profit organizations with findings from Federal grant- or contract-supported research.
Abstract Preparation
- The cover page must be double spaced and must contain the following information centered on the page:
- Title of abstract
- Presenting author name (last name first), institution affiliation, e-mail and mailing addresses, phone and fax numbers
- Three key words that describe the topic or topics addressed in the abstract
- One or more selection criteria (listed above) under which the abstract is submitted for consideration
- The abstract must be in a word processing format that is compatible with MS Word for Windows or copy-ready in Adobe Portable Document File format version 5 or later version.
- The abstract must be at least one-half page and no more than one page (8.5 by 11 inches) long with 1-inch margins, single-column layout, and single spaced using 12-point Times Roman or similar font. Word processing files should be saved with fonts embedded if that option is available. If the abstract is submitted as an Adobe Portable Document File, tables and line drawings suitable for standard photocopy may be embedded within the abstract page. The total space covered by figures and tables must not exceed one-third of the page area.
- The title should be in all capital letters followed by author name(s),
last name(s) first. On a new line, list author institution, city, and State or country. A superscript asterisk should indicate the presenting author.
- The text and findings must address at least one of the selection criteria listed above.
- The last line of the abstract should indicate Federal grant support if any.
Abstract Submission
- Abstracts must be submitted by e-mail as described below. Your submission will be acknowledged by e-mail 2 to 3 days after receipt. Questions concerning the status of submitted abstracts should be sent to bistic@nih.gov.
- Using e-mail, send your cover page and abstract as an e-mail attachment to bistic@nih.gov. In the subject line, please type "Abstract for BISTIC
Symposium." Please make every attempt to send your online submission from
the same e-mail address where you want to receive the confirmation reply.
- Corrections to submitted material can be made by sending a replacement abstract by e-mail. Please indicate on the cover page the title and presenting author of the abstract that is to be replaced. Replacement abstracts will be accepted through September 8, 2003.
Poster Presentations
- Please note that substantial changes in poster title or content will not be permitted after poster selections are finalized. There are no plans to issue an erratum for the conference briefing book or web site posting.
- Posters selected for presentation will be exhibited during the entire meeting. At least one author must be registered for the meeting and be present during designated poster sessions. Please coordinate travel plans accordingly.
- For planning purposes, poster space will be approximately 4 by 6 feet, and posters will be mounted using thumbtacks. Please plan to use only the poster board space. No electrical outlets, tables, or chairs will be provided for poster displays.
- Recommendations to enhance the readability of posters include using 2- to 3-inch title lettering, numbered figures, and 14-point caption text.
