The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) sponsored a
combined Kick-Off Meeting and Analysis Workshop for the Genetic Association
Information Network (GAIN) held on November 29-30 at the Hyatt Dulles hotel, near
the Washington-Dulles International Airport in Herndon, Virginia.
The Genetic Association Information Network is a unique public-private partnership involving the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Pfizer, Inc., Affymetrix, Inc., and the FNIH, as well as Perlegen Sciences, Inc., Abbott, and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. GAIN was
established in February 2006 to help find the genetic causes of common
diseases by conducting large-scale genomic studies and making their results
broadly available to researchers worldwide. (Further information about GAIN
is available at www.fnih.org/GAIN/GAIN_home.shtml.)
On October 10, GAIN announced the selection of six major studies in common
diseases for genotyping. The resulting genotype and phenotype data will be
posted to a database for immediate and broad access to the scientific
community in 2007. The GAIN Kick-Off Meeting and Analysis Workshop brought
together the primary investigators and data analysts for the selected
studies with genetics and data analysis experts from the scientific
community to examine approaches to genotyping and analysis in whole genome
association studies, including study-specific and cross-study design and
analysis issues. Participation was open to the entire scientific community.
