The NIH Common Fund High-Risk High-Reward (HRHR) Program seeks to support exceptionally creative investigators who propose bold research ideas of unusually broad impact. The HRHR Program comprises four initiatives: the Pioneer Awards, the New Innovator Awards, the Transformative Research Awards, and the Early Independence Awards. The Pioneer Awards support individual investigators at any career stage; the New Innovator Awards support individual early career stage investigators (those within ten years of receipt of their terminal degree or completion of their clinical residency and who have not yet received significant NIH funding); the Transformative Research Awards support team of investigators; the Early Independence Awards support investigators who wish to establish independent research careers essentially immediately after completion of their research degree or clinical residency, thereby forgoing traditional post-doctoral training. The intent of the Annual HRHR Symposium is to bring together these outstanding researchers so that they may exchange research results, network with each other, and perhaps forge new collaborations. The symposium also will provide an important opportunity for the NIH community, including its senior leadership, to hear some of the most exciting research that is produced by NIH-funded researchers and to interact with the awardees.
