This discussion sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Science Education (OSE) in
collaboration with the Olney Theatre Center for
the Arts will use as a starting point "A Question of Mercy:" This
play, dealing with an AIDS patient's request to a physician for assistance in ending his
life, is based on the journal of PEN/Faulkner-nominated physician and author Dr. Richard
Seltzer."A Question of Mercy" will be presented at the Olney Theatre from
June 1 through July 4.
The discussion will feature the following panel:
Ezekiel J.Emanuel, M.D., Ph.D., Chief of the Department
of Clinical Bioethics, Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center, and also a breast oncologist
Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., Director of NIHs National
Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and Chief of the Laboratory of
Immunoregulation, NIAID
Bruce A. Fuchs, Ph.D., Director of NIH's Office of Science
Education
Jim Petosa - Director of Olney Theatres production
of "A Question of Mercy"
Three members of the cast the doctor/narrator, and the
young man dying of AIDS and his primary caregiver will lead off the discussion by
recreating one or more key scenes from the production.
The audience will be invited to participate in the discussion with the panel members
helping to raise questions and highlight issues. The program, which is open to the public,
will be followed by a brief informal reception.
Advance registration for the workshop is requested, but onsite registration will be
permitted on a space-available basis. Online registration
