Amy P. Patterson, M.D.
Amy P. Patterson, M.D. is Director of the Office of Biotechnology Activities (OBA), Office of Science Policy, Office of the Director, National Institutes of Health (NIH). OBA is a focal point within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for addressing the scientific, ethical, legal, and social implications raised by pioneering biomedical research such as gene transfer research, genetic testing, and xenotransplantation. OBA also manages three Federal advisory committees, the Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee; the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health, and Society; and the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Xenotransplantation. In addition to her administrative responsibilities as OBA Director, Dr. Patterson is on the clinical staff at the NIH Clinical Center and maintains an active basic research program at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Recently appointed to help lead the development of the clinical research component of the NIH Roadmap, Dr. Patterson serves as chair of the clinical research informatics steering committee and the initiative on harmonization of clinical research policies and procedures.
Prior to becoming Director of OBA, Dr. Patterson was Deputy Director of the Division of Cellular and Gene Therapies and senior medical officer in the Division of Clinical Trials Design and Analysis at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
